Understanding the Enneagram in one line

The Enneagram is a tool to understand “why I react this way” with a focus on motivation. The key is to look at the fears, desires, and avoidance patterns that create the behavior rather than the behavior itself.

Dictionary of key concepts

Type: This is the default response strategy I use most often.

Avoidance mechanism: A psychological method used automatically to avoid anxious or uncomfortable feelings.

Obsessions (Stereotypes): A habit of thinking that causes one to repeat and believe that only a certain way is safe.

Core Motivation: These are the psychological needs I desperately want to get from my relationships and accomplishments.

Unhealthy/Average/Healthy: This is a state section in which the intensity of expression varies depending on the level of stress and self-awareness even for the same type.

Spiritual growth: A direction of maturity that recognizes automatic reactions and moves toward broader, more balanced choices.

Type resolution order

Step 1: Check your basic engines in Overview, Avoidance Mechanisms, Obsessions and Motivations.

Step 2: Find automatic reactions that are repeated in real life in the unhealthy/average section.

Step 3: Check the strengths you already have in the health section.

Step 4: In spiritual growth, decide on one action routine to practice for the next two weeks.

Beginner practical routine (5 minutes)

Write down one scene that made you feel very emotionally shaken today, and record your thoughts, actions, and body reactions at that time in that order. Then, if you answer “What was the emotion I was avoiding?” and “What was I trying to protect?” in one line, your understanding of the type will become much clearer.

Things to note

Type is not a stigma that fixedly defines a person. Expression will vary depending on the situation, relationship, and state of recovery, and the core purpose is not to prove “this is who I am” but to increase healthier choices.

How to increase analysis accuracy

When reading the type page, check based on “repeated actions in stressful situations” rather than “pleasant sentences.” If you compare the top 2-3 types together and recheck after 2 weeks, the accuracy of your self-understanding will increase.
